Book Adventure Introduces A New Point System

Baltimore, MD, July 27, 2001 -- Book Adventure, the free on-line reading motivation program that encourages children to read, is excited to announce a new point system that rewards children for reading higher level books.

Children earn points after completing an on-line quiz about a book they’ve read. Students in kindergarten through second grade must complete a five-question quiz, while students from third grade to eighth grade are required to take a ten-question quiz. In order for any child to acquire the points, he/she must score sixty percent or higher on the quiz. All points, which can be redeemed for prizes, are added to the child’s account.

The advent of Book Adventure comes at a time when a shocking 70 percent of 4th grade students are not able to read at their grade level - a situation that isn't helped by summers void of educational activity. Across the country Americans are faced with an urgent mission - to help our young people learn the rewards of picking up a good book.

Students in kindergarten through second grade will continue to earn 100 points for a perfect score quiz, while third through fifth graders now have the ability to earn 150 points. Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade can now receive 200 points for answering all ten multiple-choice questions correctly.

Book Adventure recognized that older students were dedicating more time to the completion of their longer and more difficult books. “We wanted to give the older children the same opportunities to win prizes as their younger counterparts, while at the same time encourage them to continue reading higher level books,” said Kelly Hodge-Williams, Executive Director of Book Adventure.

Book Adventure is a free on-line reading motivation program that uses technology and incentives to motivate children (grades K-8) to read. Book Adventure allows children to create personalized book lists from over 5,500 titles, take quizzes on the books on their lists, and earn prizes for reading. Book Adventure currently has more than 520,000 registered users, with more than 76,600 classrooms using the Web site as a reading resource. Children have taken more than 2.5 million quizzes since the site was established in April 1999.To sign up for Book Adventure, students, parents and teachers can log on at www.bookadventure.org.
