Free Education Site Launches "Book Adventure Week"

Program Includes Nationwide Book Donation

(Baltimore, MD) September 27, 2001 – Book Adventure (www.bookadventure.org), a free online reading motivation program, is celebrating its first annual Book Adventure Week October 1 – 7, 2001. As part of the national celebration, book donations will be made to school libraries in need. Young readers who register on the site will earn 100 points toward great prizes, such as games, magazine subscriptions, and downloadable activities. Current registered students can also refer friends to earn up to 200 extra points.

"With an alarming 70% of 4th grade students not able to read at grade level, the challenge is clear for parents and educators – encourage children to read more often," said Kelly Hodge-Williams, Executive Director of Book Adventure. “Book Adventure Week is an added incentive to introduce children to the rewards of reading.”

Book Adventure sponsor Houghton Mifflin has pledged to donate one book for every child who registers on the site during Book Adventure Week. Recognizing the national shortage of reading materials in schools, the books will be distributed to school libraries throughout the United States.

Book Adventure has over 550,000 registered users and students have taken more than 2.6 million quizzes to earn prizes since its creation in 1999. Book Adventure promotes independent reading by letting students select the books they want to read. Online quizzes are used to award points for reading comprehension.

"Motivation and encouragement are keys to reading success, and we’re delighted to offer added incentives during this week," said Hodge-Williams. "We encourage children to log on with their teacher or parent to donate a book and begin their own Book Adventure."

Book Adventure is a free on-line reading motivation program that uses technology and incentives to motivate children (grades K-8) to read. Book Adventure allows children to create personalized book lists from over 5,500 titles, take quizzes on the books on their lists, and earn prizes for reading. The site also provides useful educational information and resources for parents and teachers, who can log on to monitor students’ progress. To sign up for Book Adventure, students, parents and teachers can log on at www.bookadventure.org.
