Brevard County Student Reads 445 Book to Win National Reading Contest, Family Trip to Washington, DC

Online Reading Incentive Program Hosts Special Contest to Motivate Students to Read

May 24, 2000 - Madison Myers, a first-grader from Brevard County, flexed her reading muscles to win the grand prize of the 2nd National Book Bonanza Contest hosted by the Book Adventure Foundation. After reading 445 books, the dedicated first-grader is on her way to Washington, DC for a four-day grand tour of the nation's capital. Book AdventureTM, a free online reading incentive program, kicked off the Book Bonanza Contest to generate more enthusiasm about reading by adding to the arsenal of Book Adventure prizes used to reward students for their reading success.

In addition to reading the most books at or above her grade level, Madison had to earn a perfect score on the Book Adventure online quizzes for each title to win the Book Bonanza. Madison is one of two grand-prize winners with the chance to see the Washington Monument, the White House, Capital Children's Museum and more. Delta Air Lines, Hilton Hotels Corporation, Hertz Rent-a-Car, Rainforest Cafeā and Fuddruckers generously contributed to the grand-prize package.

Four second-place winners won $500 gift certificates toward a computer or a bicycle contributed by the Book Adventure Foundation and eight third-place winners won an "Edutainment Fun Pack" made possible by General Cinema's Summer Kids' Series, Crayola Fun, Patch Products, Inc. and Barnes & Noble.com.

"We are amazed by Madison's accomplishment. Not only did she read hundreds of books, but she earned perfect quiz scores and more than doubled the total of our last Bonanza winner!" said Kelly Hodge-Williams, Executive Director of the Book Adventure Foundation. "We are delighted Book Adventure can provide readers with such exciting incentives through the Book Bonanza contest. And the incentives must be working considering that more than 1,000,000 quizzes were completed since Book Adventure's launch last year. "

When asked about her motivation to win this contest, Madison said she only wanted to win the trip to Washington, DC "because my Nana lives there." Madison attends the Educational Horizons Charter School.
