Contests Frequently Asked Questions



What is a contest?
The types of contests are endless - families can compete against other families, classrooms against classrooms, or an entire school can even challenge a rival school! Set the contest dates and let the fun begin! Anyone using Book Adventure can create or join a contest; only students are able to earn points toward a contest.

Who can create a contest?
Any Book Adventure user - students, parents, and teachers - can create a contest. But, only students are able to quiz on books to earn points toward the contest.

How do I create a contest?
To create a contest, please complete these steps:
  1. Log in to your Home Student, School Student, Parent or Teacher account
  2. Go to your "My Contests" page
  3. Click on the "Create a Contest" link
  4. You will be prompted to enter a contest name and the start and end dates and times. Once you click the "Submit," button, the website will automatically create and display a Contest Pin Number, which cannot be changed.
  5. Your contest has now been created. Provide the contest name and pin number to anyone who wants to participate in the contest.
How do I join a contest?
To join a contest, please do the following:
  1. Log in to your Home Student, School Student, Parent, or Teacher account
  2. Go to your "My Contests" page
  3. Click on the "Join a Contest" link
  4. You will be prompted to enter your contest name and pin number. Once you click the "Submit," button, you will be automatically added to the contest entered.
  5. If you no longer wish to participate in the contest, or have joined the wrong contest, you should click on the "Remove Myself from This Contest" button on your "My Contests" page. NOTE: A warning box will appear, because if you proceed with removing yourself from the contest, you cannot undo the process. While you will keep the points that you have earned in your own account, the points will be removed from the contest. This action cannot be undone if you click “yes” to proceed.
How long will a user remain part of a contest?
Once a team member has joined a contest, they will remain a part of that contest until:
  • The contest participant removes themselves from the contest
  • The contest leader removes a particular member from the contest

How are points accumulated as part of the contest?
While a part of a contest, every quiz that a participant completes and any points that are earned are applied to the participant's individual account as well as to the contest. Only those points earned within the contest time frame (that is, between the start date/time and end date/time) will be reflected in the contest point totals.

Can contest participants still redeem points for prizes while participating in a contest?
Yes. Contest participants earn individual points for the quizzes they complete. They can redeem them for the prizes available in the Prize Library. Redeeming the points for prizes while a member of a contest will not effect the cumulative score that is recorded in the Contest Report.

What is a contest pin number?
A contest pin number is basically a password created for a contest. It is a combination of letters and numbers that the website automatically assigns to each contest. The pin number cannot be changed.

I have forgotten my pin number. What do I do?
Please contact your Contest Leader to obtain your password. If you are a Contest Leader and have forgotten your password, please email Book Adventure at Book.Adventure@SylvanLearning.com with your user name and the contest name to receive your team pin number.

How can I view the contest leaderboard?
You can view the contest leaderboard at anytime. To do so, log in to your account and go to your "My Contests" page. From there, you can select a contest and click on the "View Leaderboard" button. If you are the Contest Leader, you will be able to view the full contest report.

How can I edit my contest's start/end dates and times?
As a Contest Leader, you can edit the start and end dates and times if need be. To do so, log in to your account and go to your "My Contests" page. From there, select the contest you would like to edit and click on the "Edit Contest Details" button. You will be unable to change the start date once a contest is already in progress.

How can I delete a contest?
Once your contest has ended or if you create a contest in error, a Contest Leader may delete the contest through their "My Contests" page. Once on your "My Contests" page, select the contest you would like to delete and click the "Delete Contest" button.NOTE: A warning box will appear, because if you proceed with deleting the contest from the website, it cannot be undone. The contest will be permanently removed. This action cannot be undone if you click “yes” to proceed.

Alternatively, you may wish to just de-activate a contest for a period of time. This can be used if you wish to save your contest's data but do not want to actively promote a contest. To de-activate the contest, within your "My Contests" page, select the contest you would like to de-activate and then click on the "De-Activate Contest" button. You will be able to re-activate this time whenever you choose by clicking on the "Re-Activate Contest" button.
